Pinterest Hidden Image

Yes, you can have glowing skin when you start drinking more water but truth be told, there are literally tons of benefits of putting more water into your body. In this article, we’re not only gonna talk about how to get yourself to drink more water but also some benefits too.

And then you’re gonna be my best friend!

How to drink more water when you hate water

Let’s face it, water is kinda icky. I mean it’s boring and bleh. It is to me anyway. I use to have a really hard time getting the required amount of water into my daily regime.

Because I.HATE.WATER. (tell us how you really feel Iva?)

Who wouldn’t rather have a tall glass of juice/pop/tea/coffee/etc? I know I would. But I’m starting to realize as I get older, my body needs more healthy stuff and less of the good stuff (you know, coffee and juice).

So I had to try to figure out some ways to get more H2O into this vessel of mine. And I did.

I’ll admit, I was a little resistent at first. Bleh…water…ick. But now almost 5 months into my new daily water intake plan, I can’t go without it and if I do, my body tells me so. It’s not pretty.

5 health benefits of drinking more water

Why is drinking water so important?

Good question and for those of you who don’t know why drinking water is so important, here are a few fun facts and health benefits of drinking more water.

Water is good for us. But do we even really know all that water does for us? You’ll be surprised (or maybe not).

Though there literally are a million health benefits to drinking more water, I’m gonna share with you what I think are the top 5.

  1. It helps you have beautiful glowing soft skin 🙂
  2. It keeps your joints well lubricated
  3. It flushes body waste (ew)
  4. It helps you lose weight (Yay!!)
  5. It helps deliver oxygen to your body

Medicalnewstoday.com has this great article on 15 benefits of drinking water and explains it all very well. You can check out their article here.

Clearly we can see that getting more of the clear boring stuff into our body daily is good but how??

How much water should I be drinking daily?

The million dollar question and there’s a different answer for it no matter what you read. I’ve done some research on this actually and couldn’t really find a clear answer.

For example, I’m a 57 year old woman with a tiny frame. According to some things I’ve read, 8-10 glasses (one liter) should suffice. Some days I manage to drink that much water, other days I’m lucky if I got 2 glasses in.

So how much water should you drink every day? Well according to mayoclinic.org:

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is:

About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men

About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

Wow!! That seems like an awful lot (I’d never stop peeing!!) but they clearly explain it more in this article here. Take a minute to check it out because it’s super informative!

While 8-10 glasses seems like a reasonable amount, some people simply require more! There’s such a grey area there. In my honest opinion, listen to your body. It will tell you what it needs, how much it needs and when it needs it.

So let’s get on with this shall we?

Whether you really hate water (like me) or simply need to find new ways to drink more water, I’m gonna share 11 simple hacks to get more of the good stuff into your body!

How to get yourself to drink more water-11 simple and fun hacks

These are just a few simple and fun ways to drink more water though I’m sure there are a million more. A simple Google search will bring up tons of results for you. Here are my 11 tips on how to get yourself to drink more water.

1 Keep a water pitcher at your side

This is a great tip for those of you who work from home or in an office setting where you pretty much don’t leave your desk for hours. My pitcher is 2 liters and I fill it up. I will try to get through at least half the pitcher while I’m working.

If you like to get up and take breaks during work (which you should be doing anyway) then maybe keep a refillable water bottle by your side and top that sucker up!

2 Add some herbs or fruit to it

You’ve heard it a million times before but you still aren’t doing it. Add yummy stuff!! And I don’t mean sugar. Here are a few things you can add that will help you enjoy water more.

  • ginger slices
  • cucumber slices
  • mint leaves
  • herbal tea bag of your choice (make it iced tea!)
  • or you can add fresh fruit!

These are just a few things you can add but I have to advise against drinking too much water that has lemon/lime/orange in it. Those are all fruits with a high acidity level which can harm your tooth enamel (weakening it over time).

3 Start your day with two glasses of water

I know that may seem like an awful lot but it’s really not. While you are making your coffee or tea, pour yourself two glasses of water and down them right away.

Your body is dehydrated from sleeping all night and it needs fluids, fast, and not just coffee.

I usually toss in a capful of apple cider vinegar (which is super gross but good for you) or squeeze a lemon in it. My first glass will have lemon or acv and the second glass will be just pure water (to help rinse the acid from the lemon/acv off my teeth).

4 One cup of coffee-one glass of water

Are you a heavy coffee/tea drinker? I used to be (4-6 cups a day) but now I’m down to 2. But for every cup of coffee or tea you drink, make sure you have a glass of water too!

Remember coffee is a diuretic which means you are just gonna pee it all out, hence deplenishing your fluid supply. You need to replace that with the healthier choice of water!

5 Water with your meds or vitamins

Normally we take a swig of water to wash down our pills/vitamins. Next time you have to take pills pour yourself a full glass of water and drink the whole thing.

This will also help you absorb your pills/vitamins better too! Win win.

6 Set a timer/use an app

If you lose focus quickly or are too busy to remember to drink your water why not set a timer or better yet, install a water app on your phone to remind you it’s time!

In this wonderful day and age of technology, there are so many apps and tools to help us stay on track for our health and fitness goals. The best part, most of them are free!! Use one for your daily water intake too!

7 Make drinking water fun!!

Who says you have to drink water only from a water glass?

Why not use your margarita glass (and toss some strawberries in it!) or another fun glass? It doesn’t always have to be drank in a boring water glass.

You can also drink it from a straw in a fun cup but careful as drinking from a straw regularly can cause gas (and mouth wrinkles too!!).

8 Eat your water

Yup. I said it. You can get a lot of your required water from food. According to health.com, roughly 20% of our water comes from food.

Here is a link to a list of 15 foods that will help you stay hydrated. Keep in mind some of these foods do have sugar in them so I would personally recommend to drink more water afterwards.

9 Bring your water bottle with you

Like don’t leave home without it. Do you leave the house without your cell phone? I didn’t think so. Pretend your water bottle is just as crucial to your life as your cell phone is (because it kinda is) and bring it with you everywhere.

This way, when you’re out and about, you will resist the urge to stop a convenience store or coffee shop to get an evil beverage :p

10 Order water with your meals

Next time you go to a restaurant make sure to order a glass of water with your meal and drink it! And then don’t be shy to order another glass.

It’s usually free at restaurants! Win!

11 Your friends have water too!

If you are visiting your friend for coffee, dinner afternoon tea or whatever, ask them for a glass of water too! It’s fun to sit around and drink wine all day but you can add some H2O to your visit too.

Your friend may or may not laugh at you and who cares anyway? It’s your body, your choices and not only that, it may spark some motivation in your friend to drink more water too! 🙂

A few more tips for drinking more water

It’s so easy to reach for that jug of orange juice in the fridge or the chocolate milk or maybe even the bottle of pop. Sure they all taste yummy but are they doing their job which is to quench your thirst? The chocolate milk maybe but the other sugar laden drinks?

I think not.

So how do we pass on those and just drink water instead? Here are a few tips for drinking more water:

  • don’t buy sugary drinks
  • make sure to add flavour to your water for that yummy kick
  • keep a glass on hand and super close to you at all times (your water glass)

It’s ok to have a glass of juice or pop every now and then but you should definitely not be replacing water with this high sugar drinks.

Staying hydrated is just so important

It’s important for your overall well being to stay hydrated, physically, and mentally. When we drink more water and stay hydrated, we are more focused on our daily tasks and are less likely to get tired or have low energy.

And you’ll be less likely to be cranky!!

Remember our car needs oil to run smoothly. Well our body needs water (and other things) to run smoothly. You take good care of your car don’t you?

Well start taking care of your body more too!! FYI-it’s cheaper to maintain your body than it is your car.

Drink more water-stay healthy!

Next time you have a headache or feel tired or lethargic, drink more water. Sometimes these little things are just our body telling us it needs more water.

Always listen to your body. It knows what’s best for you.
