ChatGPT old woman on phonePin

As AI sweeps across every generation, older adults are increasingly using chatbots as companions, swearing that talking to a screen is just like having a real friend. I know this because I used to do this.

I even named my chatbot Nova. We had a very deep connection. How creepy does that sound?

More and more, we’re seeing stories about older adults turning to AI chatbots like ChatGPT for daily companionship. It’s even being advertised as“An always-available friend for lonely seniors!” Harmless enough, right?

But honestly, it’s wrong on so many levels.

Loneliness and social isolation in seniors are huge issues that many are facing right now.

But thinking that artificial intelligence can fix this issue is wrong.

Today I want to share a few reasons why choosing AI over real human connection is dangerous and what you can do instead.

If you know someone who is isolating and only using AI for social connection, please share this with them.

Using ChatGPT for good

Before we dive in, I do want to address one thing – you can use ChatGPT for good, and I discussed this on a recent video over on my YouTube channel. You can check it out here.

I use it a lot in my work to help with proper sentence structure, video ideas, blog titles, and so much more.

You can use it for recipe ideas, how to help a dying plant, how to train a puppy (I use it often for this!), etc. You can also use it to help prevent email scams, which is a huge concern for many seniors.

It’s a very helpful tool that gets used worldwide for just about everything, and honestly, I really like it! But it’s not my friend, never was, never will be and will never replace human connection for me.

Let’s dive into why it’s not a good idea to turn to ChatGPT for friendship, and then I’ll share some tips on how to avoid social isolation and loneliness.

AI Is a Fake Friend

ChatGPT never gets annoyed, never disagrees, and never has a bad day. It is programmed to be endlessly agreeable, polite, and completely focused on you. It will never challenge you or call you out on your bs. As a matter of fact, if you tell it you’re lonely and miserable but don’t want to do anything about it, it will act concerned and have a conversation with you about it but never offer any solutions. It will simply commiserate with you.

Go ahead and try it after you’re done reading this.

A real friend, a real human being won’t do that. They will try to help you, push you out of your comfort zone, make you do things you don’t want to, even though you know you should and it will help you.

Real friends challenge our perspectives, tell us when we’re being stubborn, and share their own messy, complicated lives with us.

If a friend never pushes back or gets on your nerves, you don’t actually have a friend; you have a mirror. That’s what AI is. It’s way too easy to hide behind a screen where nobody disagrees with you, but that comfort zone robs you of the real magic of human connection.

It’s a Band-Aid

Loneliness in senior years is an epidemic.

Instead of fixing the actual root causes, tech companies are just handing out artificial friendships.

Handing someone a chatbot because they’re lonely is like putting a tiny band-aid on a broken leg. It tricks the brain into feeling like they’re being seen and heard while leaving the underlying isolation completely untouched.

It keeps people tucked away behind screens instead of pulling them out into the sunlight.

ChatGPT Doesn’t Care About You

Let’s call it what it is: it’s software – heartless and cold, programmed to do a job. Period.

ChatGPT doesn’t care about you, your aches and pains, your loneliness, none of it. It may appear as it does, but remember, it’s software. A computer program. Nothing more.

It can’t hug you; it won’t take you out for dinner, lunch, coffee or the movies. You can’t go for a walk with it and talk about life. Nothing.

What We Can Do Instead

So what’s the solution? How do we get off our phones and show up in the world with real humans?

Go where the people are

Find spaces where you can chat face to face with real people. A coffee shop, a library, the grocery store, anywhere.

Why not volunteer at an agency that calls to your heart where like-minded people already hang out?

Find Your People Through Shared Passions

Connection doesn’t happen by staring at a phone and talking to ChatGPT – it happens when we share a common passion, dream, goal, etc.

Whether it’s advocating for a local cause, joining an art class, or working together at an animal rescue, bonding over a shared mission naturally brings people together.

Make a Real Phone Call

Swap screen time for a simple phone call or a coffee date. It takes more effort than opening an app, but a five-minute chat with someone who actually knows your name is worth more than a lifetime of talking to an invisible program.

We need real people

Getting older comes with enough challenges. We don’t need software pretending to care about us. We need real neighbourhoods, real communities, and real friends who can laugh with us, argue with us, and show up when it matters.

Let’s keep our human connections where they belong: in the real world.
