If you’re like me, you’re always looking for more natural ways to relieve muscle pain rather than reaching for a bottle of Ibuprofen. This super easy-to-make magnesium lotion is perfect for all your aches and pains.

I try to go natural as much as I possibly can when it comes to my health and will only reach for over-the-counter medication when the pain is really bad (i.e., for migraines, severe back pain, etc.).

Normally, for muscle pain relief, I will reach for lavender oil, or if I don’t have any on hand (which is rare, but it happens), I’ll use mentholated cream from the store. But then I did some research lately and whipped up this powerful magnesium lotion for muscle pain.

The magnesium flakes and the essential oils used in this lotion are amazing. Let’s discuss the benefits of magnesium and then get right to the recipe.

Healing Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium is such a mineral that comes with a plethora of healing benefits, not only for pain but also for bone health and so much more. Many people take magnesium to reduce migraine incidents.

Here are a few other benefits of magnesium.

  • controls blood sugar
  • regulates blood pressure
  • supports the growth of bones
  • neutralizes stomach acid
  • boosts energy
  • maintains the health of your nervous system

So, you can see that magnesium is a powerhouse mineral that everyone needs to take daily for optimum health. You can find magnesium in many foods you consume, such as bananas, avocados, nuts and seeds, plant-based foods, and many whole grains.

Magnesium has known roles in the function of muscles and the nervous system, which mediate pain. Because of these roles, researchers have looked at magnesium as a possible treatment for certain types of muscle pain.

  • 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

This magnesium lotion recipe is super easy to whip up, and you’ll have muscle pain relief in no time!

  • Boil the water, then add the magnesium and stir until completely dissolved,
  • Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax to a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30-second intervals until fully melted. Stir well between each heat session.
  • Pour melted mixture and magnesium into a bowl (or stand mixer) and beat on high for 5 minutes.
  • Allow to rest for 10 minutes, then beat again for a minute. Add essential oils and beat to combine.

If you don’t have shea butter, you can easily substitute it for cocoa butter, mango butter, or avocado butter. The essential oils used are both powerful oils for healing in this sore muscle relief cream, but peppermint oil is also a good substitute for eucalyptus oil if that’s all you have on hand.

how to store magnesium lotion

It’s best to store this lotion in a cool, dry place, especially if you live in a hot climate. You can also safely store it in the refrigerator, but keep in mind it will be slightly cool when you apply it to your skin!
