First dates are exciting and awkward. You want to make a good first impression. You dress your best and put on your best smiley face, but no matter how much effort you put into yourself, sometimes it’s the words that get spoken that ruin the whole first date.

Chances are, some of them may have had better luck in the dating ring. Ah well. Here we are at 62, still single, happy but looking-ish (but not too hard).

Talk About Your Ex
For the love of God and everything holy, please don’t do this. Your date probably doesn’t care how your ex wronged you or all the terrible things she did as a person.
You’re not perfect either; besides, there are 2 sides to every story.
Be Rude to the Server
Seriously. Don’t be rude to anyone, really but the waiter? Come on. They’re just trying to do their job. Show a little respect. If you’re rude to the waiter, you’re not a nice person. Period.

Talk About Yourself the Whole Time
It’s BORING to listen to someone talk about themselves for hours. Trust me on that. It’s also super hard to get to know the person sitting across from you if the entire conversation is about you.

Hey, listen. I understand that first dates are nerve-wracking and overwhelming and maybe a drink before might help, but to show up drunk? Oy. Please don’t. What a way to make a bad first impression.
If you’re an alcoholic, go fix yourself before you start dating. Trust me when I tell you, no one wants to date an alcoholic.
Lie About Anything
What the heck? Why would you even think about doing that? The truth eventually comes out. Once a liar, always a liar, and we all know a liar can never be trusted.

Trash Talk the People in Your Life
The cringe factor for this one is pretty high. When you start trash-talking people, it’s a huge turnoff. First dates are supposed to be fun and a great way to get to know each other, not talk crap about everyone else. Ew.
And if you’re trash talking your family then that’s a warning sign of poor relations and that’s a hard pass for me.
Check Your Cell Phone All the Time
If I’m boring and you aren’t enjoying your time with me, just say so—no need to be rude.
Being on your phone while you’re on your first date or any date for that matter, is totally disrespectful and says a lot about you.
Check Out Other Women
You’re kidding, right? Or maybe you didn’t think I would notice you staring at that other woman.
Seriously, how rude can you be? Did you forget that you are on a first date, and the woman across from you has feelings? Oy.
Don’t Get Too Touchy Feely
Whoa, babe, back up. We just met, and I’m still not even sure I like you. Don’t presume it’s ok to try and kiss me or touch me.

Compare Me to Your Ex
Don’t you even dare. I swear to God. If you are not over ex, just be honest about it and maybe stop dating until you are ready but listen, I am not your ex. I am me.
