I’ve become a DIYer in the last 10 years or so. I don’t quite remember how I got started, but I’m sure glad I did. I make just about everything, from anti-aging masks to body butter and even homemade mouthwash. I thought I would share my DIY mouthwash with you today.

It’s so simple to make and only requires 3 ingredients, one of them being water!

I call this one homemade magic mouthwash because it not only freshens your breath but also helps kill infections (sore teeth, gums, etc.).

We’re going to dive right in, and I’m going to show you how to make homemade mouthwash. I promise you’ll never buy mouthwash from the store again!

But first, I want to discuss some of the health benefits of peppermint oil and baking soda when used in a DIY mouthwash.

Benefits of Peppermint Oil

I love peppermint oil in my homemade magic mouthwash. It leaves my whole mouth tingly and feeling so clean and fresh. But that’s not all peppermint oil does.

  • anti-bacterial
  • anti-fungal
  • prevents microorganism growth that can lead to infections
  • freshens breath naturally
  • soothes and heals mouth sores

Benefits of Baking Soda

We all know how useful baking soda is around the house and in the kitchen for cooking and baking, but did you know it has some great healing benefits when used in homemade mouthwash? Here are a few.

  • whitens and brightens teeth
  • kills bacteria
  • prevents cavities
  • prevents gingivitis
  • gently removes plaque

What you need for DIY mouthwash

Remember I told you all that you need is 3 ingredients? I wasn’t kidding. Here they are:

  • Distilled water (spring water, bottled water, etc)
  • Baking Soda
  • Peppermint Oil

You’ll also need a bottle or container to store your DIY mouthwash in. I saved an old mouthwash bottle I bought at a store and simply refilled it when it ran out. You can use a glass bottle or any bottle, really, as long as it comes with a lid to keep the contents fresh and free of dirt.

how to make homemade mouthwash

My bottle is 250 ml, which is around 8 oz, and this lasts me about two weeks or so, depending on how often I use it. Some days, I just forget.

Instructions For Homemade Mouthwash

  1. First, I fill the bottle with distilled water, leaving enough room for baking soda and shaking the contents.
  2. Add your baking soda. Now I generally don’t measure exactly how much (a trait I got from my mom) so I normally add about 3 tsps. I honestly don’t think you can add too much.
  3. Lastly, I add the peppermint oil. Another ingredient I don’t count, but it’s roughly 10-15 drops.
  4. Shake everything up well, and you’re done.

Variations for Homemade Magic Mouthwash

While I use peppermint oil for this mouthwash, you can basically use any essential oil you want that are safe to use internally. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Clove oil
  • Tea tree oil
  • Thyme
  • Mryhh
  • Spearmint

how to store homemade mouthwash

It’s perfectly ok to store your homemade mouthwash in your bathroom vanity, on the counter or wherever you generally keep your mouthwash. I just leave mine on the bathroom counter.

If you like your mouthwash super fresh, you can store it in the fridge.

Make sure that you use a bottle with a top/lid on it to prevent your homemade mouthwash from picking up dirt, dust, debris or other airborne things.
