Many people struggle with not feeling good about themselves. I suffered from low self-esteem and 0 self-confidence my entire life. I was 52 when I finally started working on myself. At 63, I can say I feel pretty darned good about myself. 

But sadly, many still don’t have confidence or self-esteem. Today, I want to share 13 simple ways to boost your self-esteem and build your confidence so you can love life and be happy in the skin that you’re in.

Start saying good things about yourself. Focus on what you’re good at and the positive qualities you have. Saying these positive things over and over can slowly change the way you think, making you more hopeful and positive.

It’s like telling your brain that you’re fantastic; the more you say it, the more you believe it. This helps you feel more sure of yourself and builds up your confidence. Think of it as planting positive thoughts in your mind so that when you face challenges, you can tackle them with confidence.

Set Realistic Goals

Instead of trying to do everything all at once, make your big goals into smaller, doable tasks. When you finish these smaller tasks, it feels like you’ve achieved something. It’s like building blocks – each small success adds up, making you more confident over time.

Picture your big goal as a puzzle. Each small task you complete is like putting one piece into the puzzle. When you see these pieces come together, you start feeling like you can do it. It’s like taking steps that show you’re making progress and can succeed, even if it’s one step at a time.

By breaking your big goals into smaller tasks, you make them easier to do and grow your confidence bit by bit.

Celebrate Your Achievements

When you do something good, even if it’s small, take a moment to appreciate it. It could be finishing a task or reaching a goal. Thinking about these wins makes you feel good about yourself. It’s like cheering for yourself and saying, “I did it!”

This cheering helps you believe in yourself more and is a fantastic way to boost your self-esteem. When you notice and celebrate your successes, it makes you feel capable. And that feeling of doing well makes you want to keep going and achieve more.

Keep celebrating your wins, big or small, because they help you grow and feel better about yourself.

Learn from Setbacks

Instead of thinking that mistakes make you a failure, see them as chances to learn and grow. When things go wrong, figure out what happened and what you can learn from it.

Think of these lessons as steps forward, not things holding you back. Mistakes are not the end. They’re a way to improve and be more prepared for the future.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

Dump all toxic people in your life right now!

Make friends with people who lift you up and cheer you on. When you’re surrounded by positive influences, it really helps you feel good about yourself. These supportive relationships act like a strong base that boosts your confidence, encouraging you when things are tough.

Be careful about spending time with people who bring you down. Those negative connections can make you doubt yourself. So, focus on having friends who make you feel good – it creates a positive atmosphere that makes you believe in yourself more.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Taking care of your body is important for feeling good overall. When you exercise regularly, eat well, and get enough sleep, it not only keeps you physically healthy but is excellent for your mental health too!.

Remember, you are what you eat, so if you feed your body garbage food, it will perform poorly, and your mental health will decline, thus leading to low self-esteem, no self-confidence, and generally feeling horrible about yourself. 

Exercise releases those “feel-good” hormones, and a balanced diet gives your body and brain what they need to work well. By looking after these things, you set yourself up for a positive and strong mindset.

Learn New Skills

Learning new things and getting better at things can make you feel really good about yourself and help boost your self-esteem. It doesn’t matter if it’s a hobby or something for work—the process of learning and getting good at it makes you feel more capable.

Learning and becoming better at things shows you that you’re growing and achieving, which is pretty awesome. I’ve been practicing Spanish off and on for 10 years now, and every day I get better, which helps me confidently speak to locals here in my tiny town in Guatemala.

So, whether you’re doing it for fun or to improve at work, learning stuff is a great way to feel more sure of yourself.

Accept Compliments Graciously

When someone says something nice about what you’ve done or gives you a compliment, don’t just ignore it. Instead, take a moment to really soak it in, smile, say thank you and believe it. These little compliments just prove that you are awesome and are a great way to boost your self-esteem.

When you accept these compliments, it helps you see yourself in a better way. It’s like adding positive thoughts about yourself. So, when people praise you, don’t push it away – let it be another reason to feel good about who you are.

Practice Self-Compassion

Be as kind and understanding to yourself as you would be to a friend. It’s okay to make mistakes and have imperfections because everyone does. Treat yourself the way you would support a friend who’s going through a tough time or has made a mistake.

When you accept that it’s normal to have flaws, you can be more forgiving of yourself. Instead of being hard on yourself, you can learn from mistakes without being too tough, which helps you grow and have a better relationship with yourself.

Stand Tall and Dress Confidently

How you carry yourself and look can affect how you feel inside. Standing up straight, looking people in the eye, and wearing clothes that make you feel good are all part of this. Standing tall shows others that you’re confident and makes you feel more confident.

Making eye contact tells others and yourself that you’re open and sure of yourself. Also, wearing something that makes you feel good can boost your mood and make you feel better about yourself. 

Paying attention to these simple things is like showing respect to yourself and can help you feel more positive and strong. Simple and fun ways to boost your self-esteem!

Limit Negative Self-Talk

When you think bad things about yourself, immediately stop them and replace them with three positive things about yourself. This is an easy and fun exercise that will boost your self-esteem and make you smile.

Instead of being hard on yourself, say something positive. For example, instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” tell yourself, “I’ll do my best and learn as I go.”

Doing this a lot can slowly change the way you talk to yourself. It’s like switching from being mean to being kind in your thoughts. This change can make you feel better about yourself and build a more positive way of thinking.

Volunteer and Help Others

Helping out in your community or assisting others who need it isn’t just about being helpful. It can make you feel really good, too. Doing things to improve your community or lend a hand to someone in trouble gives your life more meaning and a sense of achievement.

Being kind, no matter how small the gesture, helps others, boosts your self-esteem and changes how you see yourself. Knowing what you do makes a positive difference, builds a sense of accomplishment and shows you how valuable you are to making the world better.
