aging gracefullyPin

Before we begin, it’s important to know just what aging gracefully means.

Here’s the first Google definition: Aging gracefully involves accepting the physical and emotional changes that come with getting older, rather than resisting or fearing them.

Did you catch those words, accepting – rather than resisting?

So this is what I take this to mean. Here’s Iva’s definition:

“I’m getting old so I may as well just let aging do its job while I sit back and do nothing but accept this fate.”

I don’t know about you, but that sounds horrible. I’m not going down without a fight. I’m not accepting over resisting. And in talking to other women my age (that’s 60 and over), they ain’t going down without a fight either!

Ok look. I accept I’m getting older. That part, sure. I agree with. But the Google definition sounds like I should just accept it and leave well enough alone. Let nature do its thing. No thanx!

Here are 9 things we’re doing instead of this aging gracefully nonsense.

Aging gracefully is BS – what we’re doing instead

While I’ve only listed 9 things here, I’m sure there are women around the world who can add to this list. Feel free to do so in the comments section! I’d love to hear how you’re ‘not’ aging gracefully and what you’re doing instead.

🟡Lifting Heavy Sh*t

Yup. Every time I walk into the gym, I push myself harder than the last workout. I’m all about building those muscles and proving I ain’t no frail old lady.

I just quit smoking (after being a smoker for 50 years), so it’s taking me a while to get stronger and not out of breath, but I’m doing it. I live alone and I need to be able to move, lift and rearrange things myself without having to call for help.

We don’t always have someone to call.

🟡Hard Pass on the Sugar

Gone are the days of consuming cakes, pies, donuts and chocolate bars without batting an eyelash. We’re kinda taking that sh*t a lot more seriously these days. We know sugar is the devil and it has no place in our lives.

I recently just finished a 30-day no sugar challenge, and the results were amaze-balls. You can check out my video here about it and/or read the blog here about it.

🟡Owning Our Grey

I just quit dying my grey hair about 3 months ago, and though it was a tough decision (I was positive I was never going in the ground with grey roots), I felt it was time. As a former 25-year hairstylist, beauty and image meant everything, but it doesn’t anymore.

Now what matters is just being myself, not fussing over roots, not trying to look 25 anymore and loving my hair!

🟡Starting Businesses, Writing Books, Launching Podcasts

Hell, ya!!!!!! While I’ve been at this blogging stuff for almost 10 years now, I recently decided to launch a digital product business. I’m still working out the deets, but I’m full steam ahead. No cognitive decline here!

We mean business (pardon the pun) and we know there are hundreds of thousands of women our age and over who need support, inspiration and more. And we’re here to deliver it!

🟡Getting Serious About Health

I never cared much about my health before. I mean, I smoked for over 50 years, so obviously I didn’t care too much about it. I sure af do now.

I eat healthy, I go to the gym daily, I walk more, and I even started drinking more water (bleh). I watched both my parents die with dementia/Alzheimer’s, and I’m doing everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen to me.

🟡Walking Like It’s a Full-Time Job

I’ll be honest, I don’t really like walking. I’m slightly lazy. I’ll take my scooter to the corner store. But these days, I find myself lacing up my running shoes and leaving the moto keys behind.

It’s important to stay as fit and healthy as I possibly can moving through my 60s and heading into my 70s (how optimistic of me!). No rocking chair and knitting needles for this girl.

🟡Loving Their Bodies

It took me a while. Not gonna lie. The crepey skin, the moles (ooph so many moles, wtf?), the wrinkles, the saggy boobies. I’d stare at myself naked and be kinda sad about it.

Now? Nope. I’m working out daily. My body is aging (wrinkling), but it’s also getting strong, lean and mean (ok, maybe not mean).

I still have this little pooch, though, and I have to work on my slouching posture a bit too but for the most part, I’m loving the skin I’m in.

🟡Making Our Own Skincare

Well, I can’t really speak for other women over 60, but I’m all about DIY skincare. I hate store-bought products and the price tags that go with them. Oh, and the false promises of *look years younger*.

Just because I smoked all my life doesn’t mean I have to be ok with looking like a Cabbage Patch doll. Nope. I’ve been whipping up all my own beauty creams, and let me tell you, THEY WORK!!

You can check out some recipes here and over here, too!

🟡Putting Ourselves First

Finally putting ourselves first — painting, travelling solo, dancing barefoot in the kitchen, singing at the top of our lungs— doing everything that brings us joy and makes our hearts happy. We’re doing things that WE want to do. For US!

We spent our entire lives pleasing everyone else. It’s our turn now. We wear what we want, do what we want and no longer answer to anyone. We come first!

final thoughts on aging gracefully

While I’m not going down without a fight, I’m not completely oblivious to the fact that anything health-wise can happen at any time. I may not be fragile, but I do need to still keep in mind I’m not 25 anymore. Things are different in your 60s.

What are you doing to stay young, fit and healthy? I’d love to know!
