15 tiny beauty hacks for glowing skin and lush locks
I’m not a fan of spending hundreds of dollars on beauty products. I can’t remember the last time I spent money on beauty creams or miracle products. I can think of better things to do with my money (you can see one thing I spend my money on here).
I’m an all-natural girl and I’m all about aging gracefully and slowly. I’m not trying to stop the aging clock or reverse aging, I just don’t want to look 85 if I’m only 62. You get what I mean.

Let’s get to the beauty hacks now!
Water is Your BFF
Bottoms up, babe! Drinking water is like giving your skin and hair an internal moisturizer. Aim for at least 8 glasses daily. When your body is hydrated, it reflects on your skin and hair, giving them a natural shine and elasticity.
Just as plants perk up after a good watering, your skin and hair, too, have a little “perk-up” moment when well-hydrated.
Dehydrated bodies show first signs on skin and hair—think dry patches and brittle hair ends. Keep that water bottle close, and maybe even jazz it up with some cucumber slices or a splash of lemon for added zest!
Embrace Natural Oils
Argan, coconut, jojoba, or olive—natural oils are like liquid gold. They not only moisturize but also provide essential nutrients. Use them for a nightly massage, or add a few drops to your daily cream or conditioner.
Think of these oils as your personal, nature-sourced potions. Ever noticed how, after applying these oils, your skin and hair seem to sing a little thank you note? That’s because they’re packed with all-natural goodness.

Exfoliate Regularly
Our skin and scalp are like that old bookshelf collecting dust—only the “dust” here is dead skin cells. Gently scrubbing your skin once a week helps remove those dead skin cells, making your skin look brighter.
For hair, a gentle scalp massage while shampooing can help in exfoliating and promoting circulation.
By gently exfoliating, you’re essentially dusting off that shelf, revealing the bright and shiny layer beneath. It’s like giving your skin a new beginning, and who doesn’t love fresh starts?
Remember, be gentle!!

Silk Pillowcases are a Game-Changer
Believe it or not, the friction between your hair/skin and your cotton pillowcase can cause breakage and wrinkles. A silk pillowcase provides a smoother surface, keeping your hair tangle-free and skin wrinkle-free.
Imagine sleeping on clouds. That’s what a silk pillowcase feels like.
So, while you’re dreaming of unicorns and rainbows, they’re working behind the scenes to ensure you wake up looking fabulous.
Check out this article on the benefits of sleeping with a silk pillowcase.
Cut Down on Heat Styling
Those hair tools may give you a fabulous look, but frequent heat styling can damage your hair. Embrace your natural texture once in a while. If you can’t resist, always use a heat protectant (sprays or serums) and opt for the lowest temperature setting.
There are awesome products for every hair type and you will surely find one that makes your hair look good naturally and a heat protectant that can really cover each hair shaft for minimum damage.
Give your hair a nice deep conditioning mask once a week if it’s really dry. Coconut oil is my go-to when I need to saturate my dry ends.
Eat Your Way to Glowing Skin and Hair
Remember, you are what you eat. Those chocolates and fries might be calling your name, but so should berries and greens.
Picture your body as a garden; the more nutrient-rich foods you eat, the more it blossoms.
Foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins are your skin and hair’s best friends. Indulge in berries, salmon, nuts, spinach, and avocados. Don’t forget to take your vitamins, too!
You can check out this article about which vitamins women over 50 should be taking.
Stay Protected from the Sun
Yes, golden hour pics are a must, but remember, the sun can also be that overly affectionate aunt who doesn’t know when to stop hugging! While a bit of sunshine is essential for vitamin D, prolonged exposure can harm your skin and hair.
Protect your skin with a good SPF and your hair with hats or scarves. Think of them as armour against those pesky UV rays.
Even indoors, an SPF lotion is needed, as the lights in the house and computer monitors have UV rays that damage the skin.
Regular Trims
I can’t stress this enough – get regular trims!!!. Even if you’re growing out your hair, regular trims (every 6-8 weeks) can prevent split ends and keep your hair looking healthy.
Trimming ensures the old, split-end tales are cut off, making way for fresh, vibrant stories. If you are growing your hair, but you have some split ends, ask your stylist if they can remove the least amount of length possible while removing most of the split ends.
And call me a weirdo, but if you are growing your hair, get trims on the day of the full moon. Thank me later!
Meditation and Sleep
Stress can wreak havoc on your skin and hair. In the hustle and bustle of life, we often forget to pause. Regular meditation helps in stress reduction. Pair that with 7-8 hours of sleep, and you’re giving your body the restorative time it needs.
With these two combined and also nurturing your body with what you are putting in it with food, water and nutrients, you will have beautiful skin and hair in no time.
Limit Chemical Treatments
From bleaching to perming, any chemical treatment can be damaging if done frequently. If you love changing your hair colour or style, ensure you deeply condition and give your hair time to recover between treatments.
You will most likely need an acidic hair treatment to restore the hair shaft’s natural PH and help it get back to healthy slowly. Bleach is always damaging, but it can be less damaging with good products and a protein bond product applied to your hair.
If you see your hair is starting to feel ‘fried,’ it probably is. Give it a break and some great treatments.
Gentle Cleansing
Scrubbing away at your skin and hair can be harsh. Picture it as trying to clean a delicate fabric with a hard brush. Always opt for products that love you back, gently cleansing without stripping away the natural goodness.
Opt for sulphate-free shampoos and gentle face cleansers. Harsh chemicals can strip your skin and hair of their natural oils.
Choose the right products for your skin and hair type. Ask a cosmetician or dermatologist for help.
DIY Face and Hair Masks
Sometimes, the best solutions are found in your kitchen. Mother Nature has provided us with ingredients like honey, aloe vera, yogurt, and bananas that can be mixed and matched to create hydrating masks.
These natural ingredients can provide an abundance of nutrients without any chemicals. I love whipping up new anti-aging face masks. Papaya, oatmeal, honey and yogurt is my new favourite one.
Limit Alcohol and Caffeine
Occasional indulgences are fine (we’re only human!), but remember moderation is key. Overdoing it can sap the glow right out of you.
But if you must have that extra coffee, balance it with extra water. Alcohol can dehydrate your skin and hair, so make sure it’s not an excessive amount.
While we’re at it, let’s throw ‘quit smoking’ in there too if you’re a smoker. I was, and I just quit my 50 year old habit finally. Remember, your health, your choices.
Exercise Regularly
Sweating it out flushes toxins, giving you that post-workout glow. Picture every drop of sweat as a tiny warrior, fighting off dullness and bringing radiance.
Physical activity also boosts circulation, which means more oxygen and nutrients for your skin and scalp. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a gym session, keep moving!
You can check out some very simple exercises here if you’re new to exercising or have limited mobility.
Consistency is Key
Remember that results won’t appear overnight. Like watering a plant daily, consistent care yields the best results. Your skin and hair routine is a commitment, a promise that you make to yourself every day.
Whether it’s a new skincare routine or hair regimen, consistency is the secret sauce. Stick with it, be patient, and over time, you’ll see the radiant results.
