Don’t we all wish there was a magic wand that we could wave over our heads and poof, eternal youth. I don’t know about you, but I sure wish for that wand some days. While there is no magic wand, there definitely are some ways to combat aging.
Today, I want to share 20 anti-aging secrets from dermatologists that will not only fight and prevent wrinkles, but will also restore a youthful appearance.
I’ve been on a health and wellness kick since I turned 60. While I’ve always been very conscious of my health, diet, and physical appearance (vain, ok, no judging), I became even more aware of all these after 60.
I embarked on a mission to not only slow down aging, but also try to get back some of my youth. Is it working? I think so!
I quit smoking and eating sugar on February 24th of this year (yes, both on the same day) and let me tell you, I’ve never felt so good and strong in my life.
You can learn more about all that here.
Anyway, my quest for better health got me Googling an awful lot. I wanted to find some anti-aging hacks, too. And what I mean by that is this: I don’t necessarily want to look 25 again, but I also don’t want to look 90 at 62 years old.
So I’m doing my best to stay youthful-looking. Ok, maybe vain.
Here are all the anti-aging secrets I found on the World Wide Web from some of the best and trusted sites I could find. Take what you want, leave the rest.

anti-aging secrets: Sun Protection
Apply Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen Daily (SPF 30+)
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation accelerates skin aging by breaking down collagen and causing pigmentation. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 shields your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
Apply it every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours when outdoors. For extended outdoor activities, consider a higher SPF for added protection. I use 50!
Here’s a great article from Good Housekeeping on the top sunscreens to use.
Wear Protective Clothing and Accessories
Clothing acts as a physical barrier against the sun’s harmful rays. Opt for long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses to protect exposed areas. Fabrics with a tight weave or those labelled with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) offer enhanced defence.
Remember, some materials may lose effectiveness when wet, so choose accordingly.
Seek Shade During Peak Sun Hours
The sun’s intensity peaks between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try limiting direct exposure during these hours to reduce the risk of skin damage. If you must be outdoors, look for shady areas or create your own shade with umbrellas or canopies.
If you can, avoid going out during those times and plan activities before or after.
Avoid Tanning Beds
Oh, the tanning bed. When I lived in Canada, I used to use one weekly. I hated winter and needed warmth and colour on my olive skin. Tanning beds are extremely popular in areas where winters are long and cold. Not only that, they’re great for combating S.A.D. Seasonal Affective Disorder.
However, tanning beds significantly increase the risk of premature skin aging and skin cancer. Instead of seeking a tan through these means, consider sunless tanning products or embrace your natural skin tone.
Your skin’s health is more valuable than a temporary tan.
anti-aging secrets: Skincare Habits
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Choose a mild, ph-balanced cleanser that effectively removes impurities without compromising the skin’s barrier.
Or, why not make your own homemade skin cleanser? I haven’t used soap in years.
You can check out some anti-aging skincare recipes here.
Make sure to cleanse twice daily—morning and night—to help maintain a clear and healthy complexion, and don’t tug at your skin.
Moisturize Regularly
Hydrated skin appears plumper and more resilient, reducing the visibility of fine lines. Use a moisturizer suited to your skin type in your daily routine. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which help retain moisture and improve elasticity.
It’s also possible to make your own moisturizer using all-natural ingredients. Can you tell I’m all about all-natural?

Incorporate Antioxidant Serums (e.g., Vitamin C)
Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that contribute to skin aging. Vitamin C, in particular, brightens the complexion and supports collagen synthesis.
Apply a few drops of a vitamin C serum each morning before moisturizing to protect against environmental stressors.
Use Natural/Essential Oils
Natural oils are rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins that nourish the skin. Rosehip oil, for instance, contains vitamin A (retinol) and vitamin C, which promote skin regeneration and elasticity.
Most essential oils are too strong to use on their own, so mix them with a light carrier oil like avocado, jojoba or even coconut. Test your skin first.

Apply Aloe Vera for Soothing and Rejuvenation
Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritated skin and promote healing. Aloe vera naturally calms the skin and provides moisture.
Regular application can improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles. Use pure aloe vera gel as a moisturizer or mask to reap its rejuvenating benefits. Check out this article for more information on using aloe vera in your skin care routine.
Exfoliate Weekly (1–3 times)
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, revealing a brighter complexion and promoting cell turnover. Use gentle exfoliants, such as those containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), to avoid aggravating the skin.
And of course, you knew this was coming, you can make your own anti-aging facial scrub!
Limit exfoliation to a couple of times a week to prevent irritation and over-drying and be careful not to scrub too hard.
anti-aging secrets: Lifestyle Habits
Stay Hydrated
We all know that we need to stay hydrated daily. Adequate water intake helps retain skin moisture and elasticity.
Aim for 6-8 glasses of water daily, adjusting based on activity level and climate. And I know, I know, water is boring to drink. Try adding some cucumber slices, mint leaves or squeeze a lemon in there for more flavour and a Vitamin C boost.
Eat a Balanced Diet Rich in Fruits, Vegetables, and Healthy Fats
You’ve heard a thousand times, “you are what you eat,” but do you believe it? You should. Maintaining a clean and healthy diet of whole foods supports skin health.
Stay away from sugar and processed foods. Include foods like berries, leafy greens, and fatty fish in your meals for a glowing complexion.

Get Adequate Sleep (7–9 hours)
During sleep, the body undergoes repair processes, including skin regeneration. That’s why they call it beauty sleep. Lack of rest can lead to dullness and the formation of fine lines. Quality sleep allows the skin to repair and regenerate, reducing signs of aging.
Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, and if you have a hard time sleeping, try these tips:
- stop eating and drinking at least 3 hours before bed
- no cell phone or electronics in bed
- listen to or watch calming shows/music before bed
- try Melatonin to help you relax

Avoid Smoking
Smoking accelerates skin aging by damaging collagen and elastin. It reduces blood flow to the skin, which deprives it of oxygen and vital nutrients. Over time, this leads to premature wrinkling, especially around the mouth and eyes.
I recently just quit smoking after being a 50-year smoker, and I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my skin already. I used hypnosis, but if you want to quit, either talk to your doctor about it or find a good quit-smoking source.
Check out this article here from WebMD on smoking and your skin.
Limit Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol is dehydrating and can cause skin inflammation, puffiness, and a loss of skin firmness. Over time, excessive drinking may exacerbate fine lines and dull the skin. If you have a drinking problem, speak to your doctor about it.
Alcohol is also a depressant, which is damaging to your mental health.
Tip: Balance every alcoholic drink with a glass of water and aim for moderation to protect your skin.

Manage Stress
Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which can lead to collagen breakdown and inflammation. It can also trigger skin issues like acne, eczema, or flare-ups of rosacea. And let’s not forget that stress is dangerous to your blood pressure and mental health.
Practice daily mindfulness, deep breathing, or even five minutes of quiet time to keep stress (and skin damage) in check.

Additional anti-aging secrets
Use Natural Retinol Alternatives (e.g., Bakuchiol)
Bakuchiol is a plant-based alternative to retinol that offers similar anti-aging benefits without the irritation. It can help smooth wrinkles, increase firmness, and even out skin tone.
Check out this informative article from Everyday Health on this alternative.
Protect Your Neck and Hands
These often-overlooked areas are among the first to show signs of aging due to thinner skin and frequent exposure. Extend your skincare routine (cleanser, sunscreen, and moisturizer) to your neck and hands daily.
Keep a travel-size hand cream with SPF in your bag or car to reapply on the go.
Avoid Repetitive Facial Expressions
Constant frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows can lead to dynamic wrinkles over time. I know, weird, but it’s true!
Wear sunglasses to avoid squinting in bright light, and be mindful of facial tension when concentrating or working.
Apply Skincare Products to Damp Skin
Skin is more permeable when it’s slightly damp, allowing products to absorb more effectively. After washing your face, gently pat (not rub) it and apply your serum or moisturizer right away.
Keep a facial mist handy to rehydrate your skin and refresh your look throughout the day.
final thoughts on anti-aging secrets
While we can’t miraculously look 25 again unless you go under the knife, you can slow down aging just a little. These anti-aging secrets will help you look and feel your best and possibly even boost your self-confidence.
I think it’s important to close with a little motivation and encouragement. I know some women who are depressed because they are aging, and yes, aging can be a little depressing and sad. It’s important to embrace life, go chase dreams that you buried and live your life to the fullest.
You may still have another 25-40 years of life left in you!
