Aging doesn’t mean giving up all your favourite foods that…wait. Yes, it does.

After 50, our bodies have different requirements and certain foods trigger ailments a helluva lot faster. That’s fact. We’re not the same anymore. All those things you enjoyed in your 20s and 30s hit differently now.

Sorry.

Sugar, alcohol, pasta, bread. Think, inflammation, headaches, bloating and wrinkles. Yup. It could be that we were just too busy when we were younger to notice these things happening in our bodies, or we didn’t care.

We care now. Or, at least I do. And you should, too.

Here are 10 foods to stop eating after 50 if you want to be healthy in your senior years.

10 foods to stop eating after 50

Here is my list of 10 foods to stop eating after 50. If you’re still eating any of these and have no desire to give them up, I would maybe suggest cutting back a little.

It’s so important to look after your health after 50 and especially after 60 (no, it’s not too late to start taking care of your health after 60).

Remember, health is wealth. If you don’t look after your health now, prepare to look after your illness later.

You might really enjoy this video from my YouTube channel about taking care of your health after 60.

Let’s get to this.

🟡Low-Fat Anything

When you think of ‘low-fat’ or ‘sugar-free’, always remember, they’ve removed something but have replaced it with something, sometimes even worse.

Try this! Instead of reaching for a low-fat treat at the market, you can easily whip your own!

Your body needs healthy full-fat foods (in moderation, of course), so grab a full-fat yogurt and toss some berries, homemade granola or any other healthy topping of your choice.

🟡Diet Soda

The same as low-fat, diet soda is filled with junk, yucky junk. Aspartame, sucralose, saccharin. All poison. Ok, maybe not quite poison, but pretty darned close.

You might want to check out this article on artificial sweeteners found in sodas, other drinks, and foods. Very eye-opening.

Try this! It may be hard to give up those sugary, or should I say, sugar-free drinks, but how about cutting down or weaning yourself off?

You can make your own flavoured drink by adding natural sweeteners, berries, watermelon, etc to your water and poof! You’ve got a yummy drink that’s refreshing, hydrating and delicious.

🟡 Store-Bought ‘Healthy’ Granola Bars

Oy. I always say, if you can’t pronounce anything on the label, don’t eat it. Granola bars are on this list. Have you ever looked at the ingredients of one? Good grief. They are generally FULL of sugar and other crap.

Try this! Did you know, you can make your own healthy granola bars, AND you get to see what’s in it and even be able to pronounce the ingredients. Pinterest is a gold mine for healthy recipes. Go see.

🟡 White Wine

Ya, sorry about that.

If you’re a wine drinker and wondering why you have a muffin top or belly fat even though you eat healthy and exercise, this is why. White wine (and red, too, by the way) is loaded with sugar, which leads to weight gain, and let’s not forget it’s kinda bad for your liver.

And we can’t forget that alcohol is a depressant, not so good for your mental health.

Try this! You can start by limiting your wine intake to once a week and work your way down to quitting entirely. If you need a glass of wine at night to relax and help you sleep, try herbal teas or melatonin, both healthier sleeping aids.

🟡 Deli Meats

High sodium, nitrates, preservatives…need I say more? These all contribute to inflammation, weight gain, and in my case, migraines. And oh, how I love and miss salami, but the morning migraine just ain’t worth it anymore.

Try this! Roast your own turkey, beef roast, chicken or whatever and make sandwiches with freshly roasted meat that YOU made!

🟡Seed Oils

If you were like me, you grew up with mom frying everything in vegetable oil, sunflower oil, canola oil and other crappy oil. Seed oils are unhealthy causing inflammation, joint pain, brain fog, belly fat and more.

You might really like this article to get more information on the damaging effects of seed oils.

Try this! Here is a small list of oils that are healthier for you that you should substitute your seed oils for:

  • avocado
  • olive
  • coconut
  • ghee

🟡“Healthy” Cereals

No, no and no. Have you ever really examined the nutrition label on the back of a ‘healthy’ cereal box? Do that next time. Really read it. And then try to understand it. I promise you that sugar is one of the ingredients listed, and guess what, sugar is not healthy at all.

There is nothing healthy about ‘healthy’ cereals. Stay away from them. And remember, you can make your own. Head to Pinterest and check out some awesome and easy recipes.

Try this! Make your own. Period. It’s way healthier, and at least you know what went in it.

🟡 Flavoured Yogurt

Anything that says ‘flavoured’ on it has added sh*t. Trust me on that. And I guarantee one of those added things is sugar. Bleh. Did I tell you that I recently quit sugar and I’ve never in my life felt so friggin amazing?

You can check out my 30-day no sugar challenge and results here or watch the video over on my YouTube channel here.

Try this! Buy natural yogurt or Greek yogurt and add your own flavour to it, like fresh berries, cinnamon, vanilla, the sky is the limit here.

🟡Agave Syrup

Did you know that agave syrup is up to 90% fructose? Yup. Yet it’s still being hailed as a healthier alternative to white sugar. Don’t be fooled. It’s not.

It’s terrible for your blood sugar, it’ll lead to weight gain and will cause inflammation.

Try this! If you have to use syrup for anything, try using all-natural honey or all-natural maple syrup.

🟡That Afternoon Coffee Habit

I’m sorry. I told you you have to give up everything you love. However, the jury is still out on this, and it really all depends on your sugar habit. While one cup a day is not detrimental to your health, more than 2 come with consequences.

Coffee can raise cortisol, disrupt hormones, and jack up your anxiety and blood pressure. Your 3 pm pick-me-up could be kicking the crap out of your sleep.

Try this! I love coffee as much as the next person, and giving it up is not an option for me right now.

I’ve cut down to only one in the morning, and then I switch to herbal teas in the afternoon. I don’t feel like crashing at 3 pm, and I feel pretty good.

final thoughts on foods to stop eating

I think it’s just super important to know that our bodies are so different and have special requirements. Also, we’re not 25 anymore. We are not immortal, and it’s up to us to take care of our only vessels.

And it all starts with what we’re fueling our bodies with. Some of us take care of our things and our cars better than we do our bodies. It’s time for that to stop.

Put your health first, and this way, you don’t have to make time for your illness.
