You know those random little thoughts that pop into your head when you’re sitting around thinking about ways to overtake the world? Ok, maybe a tad exaggerated, but you know what I mean.
The tiny thoughts when you’re just staring out the window, cooking dinner, sipping morning coffee, sitting at a red light – those thoughts. They don’t seem like a big deal at first, but then they kind of linger, and suddenly you realize… wait a second, this changes everything?
I get them all the time. Mostly while I’m staring blankly at my monitor, looking for some inspo (or scrolling mindlessly through FB reels). They hit me. I let them go. They come back, and my a-ha moment hits.
Or sometimes they come back exactly when the time is right, and it all makes sense. I find these thoughts hit harder as we get older. Enough babbling. Let’s get to the 15 tiny thoughts that will change your life.
15 tiny thoughts that will change your life
I think these tiny thoughts are really profound, and if you think them, really think them, they’ll make more sense to you and, quite possibly, change your life or at the very least, change the way you think about life and the people around you.
When I turned 60, everything changed, especially my thoughts about life, work, my health, my family and yes, people. A lot of these tiny thoughts I’m sharing with you today apply to every situation in everyone’s life.
You can’t change the past
Ever. What happened, happened. You can’t change it, and there’s no point going back to look at it and try to figure out how things could have been different or how to change it. It’s done. Move on.
So many of us hang on to the past and regret that things didn’t work out differently or that we let things happen the way they did. Sadly, there’s nothing we can do about it now. Time to let it go.
Comparing yourself to others is a waste of time
We are all on different paths in life, and you can’t compare your path with anyone else’s. If you do that, it will leave you frustrated and feeling unworthy and/or unsuccessful. Focus on your path only.
Funny how we all want what others have, and they want what we have. She’s prettier, smarter, popular, etc., but she probably wishes she had your sweet normal life. Stop wasting time comparing yourself to others.
Things always get better with time
I love this positive thought. People often tease me about my optimism, but I don’t care. Things always get better if you believe it.
If things seem hard or crappy now, don’t stress about it too much. Things always get better with time. You’ve been through hard times before, and you survived them, so know that you will survive this, too, and things will get better.
They always do.
Happiness is found inside of you
I want to shout this off the rooftops – Happiness is inside of you, and it’s up to you to find it. Capiche?
Not in other people or places, or things. No one else can bring you or give you eternal happiness but yourself. Don’t expect other people to make you happy.
You can’t go looking for happiness, and other people can’t bring it to you. Sit quietly and listen to your heart. That’s where all your joy, love, freedom and happiness are.
There’s always something to be grateful for
Even when things look hopeless and bleak, there’s always something to be grateful for. The beautiful thing about gratitude is this: the more you practice it, the more awesome things will come into your life to be grateful for.
It’s easy to get caught up in the ‘life sucks’ trap and think everything is hard and shitty but that’s not true. You probably have plenty of things to be grateful for. Stop and make a list – then read it!
Kindness is free
It certainly is, and God knows the world needs more kindness right now. You can sprinkle kindness everywhere you go throughout the day.
Open a door for someone, buy a homeless person a coffee, or help a senior with her groceries. The possibilities are endless. Please be a kind person today and every day.
It will change your life in ways you never even imagined. Trust me on that.
You only fail if you quit
I’m not a fan of the word failure. I don’t think there is any such thing as failure, but if you quit before you win or succeed, well, you’ve chosen to fail.
Either you win, or you learn. But you don’t fail. Too many people think they are failures because something didn’t work out the way they had hoped, and then they stop trying!
Please don’t do that. Keep going.
Everything is temporary
The good and the bad. It’s all temporary. Life, death, love, hate. Nothing lasts forever.
So whatever you’re going through now, just know that it will come to an end soon, and the sun will come out. But also remember, the good is temporary too. Enjoy it, embrace it all.
Take in everything life has to offer because in the blink of an eye, it could all be over.
What goes around comes around
Hello Karma! Revenge is for the weak. You must always remember that what goes around comes around, good and bad. But remember, that goes for you too, not just the people who did you wrong.
If you do good, good will come back to you. If you do bad, that comes back, too. That’s just the way karma works.
Your thoughts create your life
This one is always tough for people to grasp, but it’s true. What you think, you create. If you keep thinking negative and defeating thoughts, your life will reflect that.
If you keep thinking you’re a failure, you will never succeed at anything. If you keep thinking you’ll never find true love, you probably never will.
Do yourself a favour and think good thoughts.
Overthinking creates anxiety
We create scenarios in our heads that never happen, and the more we think about them, the more anxious and stressed out we get.
Next time you feel you are overthinking, take a minute and catch yourself, and then do some breathing exercises to calm down.
Worrying is a waste of time
The biggest waste of time ever. Much like overthinking, worrying can wreak havoc on our mental health and leave us in an extreme state of anxiety, usually for nothing.
Start telling yourself that everything always works out. Because it does. Stop worrying about stuff you have absolutely no control over. And speaking of control, stop trying to control everything.
Good grief. We humans cause ourselves so much suffering for nothing.
Believe you can
You can do anything you want. You must believe in yourself and your dreams. No one else can do that for you.
If you believe you can, that’s half the battle. Believe it, feel it, and achieve it. I think Walt Disney said something like that, and look how far his dreams took him.
Be the change you want to see in the world
The world is a really fragile, terrifying place to be right now. So many hard changes, disasters, violence, and death. I don’t have to go on. The world needs change, and for people to come together to make a change.
Instead of complaining about everything wrong, be the change you want to see. Nothing changes if nothing changes. Even if you want to see change in your life, it’s up to you to do it.
If something needs to change and no one is making a move, you go first.
Follow your heart, it knows the way
This is one of my favourite tiny thoughts, and sadly, not enough people believe it. Your heart never lies. It knows what it knows and feels what it feels. You can’t change that.
But if you have a really hard decision to make or need some intuitive guidance, listen to your heart. It knows exactly what you need, and it’s trying to tell you.
Quiet your mind, listen to your heart. Thank me later.
