Sugar does far more than add weight and cavities. It affects your mood, your joints, your sleep, your skin, and how well, or not so well, you age. The side effects of sugar show up in ways most people never expect. But did you know…
Sugar is also a highly addictive substance that is secretly hidden in just about everything you eat, and quitting sugar is harder than you think.
Here’s what most people don’t realize.
The side effects of sugar show up all over the body, usually slowly, and it can be hard for us to pinpoint exactly what the culprit is. As we get older, sugar becomes less forgiving. Your body doesn’t process it the same way it once did, and the damage adds up.
I am running a 30-day no sugar challenge over on my YouTube channel on January 12th (you’re welcome to join!), and I thought it would be the perfect time to write about the damaging side effects of sugar and raise more awareness.
I ran this same challenge last year. You can read about it here and see my crazy results. I’ll admit, I definitely have a sugar addiction and at 63 years old, I’m more hyper-aware of my health than ever before. I’m pulling out all stops and doing what I can to age healthily and strongly.
Quitting sugar is just one of those ways.
I’m also cutting back on shitty carbs (pasta, white rice, potatoes, etc) and trying to eat more whole foods. This is a big overhaul for me, but I’m confident I can do it. It’s important to understand how most carbs work.
Foods like bread, pasta, white rice, potatoes, and other refined starches are rapidly converted into sugar in the body. From a blood sugar standpoint, they often act just like sugar. So, I’m choosing a low-carb diet for the next 30 days.

Here are 15 ways sugar quietly messes with your body, brain, and skin.
15 damaging side effects of sugar
Let’s get right to this. I always tell people to do their own research and not to believe every single thing they read, but in this case, if what you read is bad, believe it because it’s true. Sugar is poison.
Here are 15 damaging and sneaky side effects of sugar on your body, brain and skin.
Causes inflammation
Sugar increases inflammation in the body, which is linked to almost every major age-related health issue. Joint pain, heart disease, digestive problems, and even memory decline all thrive in an inflamed environment.
Speeds up skin aging
Sugar damages collagen and elastin through a process called glycation. That shows up as wrinkles, sagging, dull skin, and loss of firmness. One of the most visible side effects of sugar is how quickly it can age your face.
Try a 30-day no sugar challenge like the one I’m holding, and take before and after pics of your face/skin. You’ll see.
Wrecks your energy levels
Sugar gives fast energy, followed by a crash. Over time, those spikes and drops leave you feeling tired, shaky, or foggy. Many people think they need more sugar when the truth is that sugar is the reason they feel exhausted.
Contributes to brain fog
High sugar intake affects how the brain uses energy. That can lead to trouble focusing, slower thinking, and that annoying feeling of walking into a room and forgetting why you are there.
Over time, this kind of brain stress leads to cognitive decline and dementia, which is why sugar comes up so often in conversations about memory and brain health.
Causes cravings
Sugar messes with hunger hormones like leptin and ghrelin. Once that balance is off, your appetite control is gone. This is one of the sneakiest side effects of sugar because it keeps you stuck in a loop.
Weakens insulin sensitivity
Over time, frequent sugar intake makes your cells less responsive to insulin. This raises the risk for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, especially after 50.
Contributes to joint pain
Inflammation from sugar can make joints feel stiff and sore. Many people notice less pain when they reduce sugar, even without changing anything else.
This was actually one of the first things I noticed throughout my no sugar challenge. My creaky, achy joints stopped aching!
Belly fat storage
Sugar causes insulin to rise, and insulin’s main job is to store fat. Unfortunately, your midsection responds faster than anywhere else. That is why belly fat and sugar tend to go hand in hand.
Disrupts sleep
When blood sugar rises and falls too sharply, it can interrupt sleep or leave you feeling unrested. Poor sleep then messes with appetite and energy regulation the next day. That combination often leads right back to more sugar.
Affects mood and anxiety
High/daily sugar intake can interfere with the brain’s natural mood balance. That often shows up as irritability, anxiety, or feeling down for no clear reason. It is one of the less talked-about side effects of sugar.
Strains the liver
Your liver ends up doing most of the work when it comes to excess sugar, particularly fructose. When that load is constant, it can lead to fatty liver and strain the body’s metabolism.
Disrupts gut health
Sugar feeds harmful gut bacteria and yeast. That imbalance affects digestion, immunity, cravings, and even mental health. You can check out this article about gut health. It’s more important than you think.
Raises heart disease risk
When sugar intake is high, triglycerides tend to rise, good cholesterol can drop, and inflammation increases. That combination is rough on the heart.
Accelerates muscle loss
As we get older, the body already has a harder time maintaining muscle. Too much sugar makes insulin less effective, which means muscles have a harder time pulling in the nutrients they need to stay strong.
It makes healthy aging impossible
All of these side effects of sugar lead to unhealthy aging and an unhealthy you.
Sugar adds extra strain to a body that already has less room for error with age, keeping it busy managing inflammation and stress instead of repairing and maintaining itself.
A Simple Way to Quit Sugar now
I’ll tell you right now, it’s not easy. It was harder for me to quit sugar than it was my 50-year smoking habit. But it’s not impossible because I did it for 30 days. After the two-week mark, it gets easier. I think if you just remind yourself of the damaging side effects of sugar, you can stay focused.
Start by cleaning out all processed foods, sugary foods, etc from your kitchen. Then make a grocery list of healthy foods like protein, healthy fats, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc.
And drink water!!!
When a craving hits, breathe through it, drink some water, and/or grab a small piece of fruit with protein (apple and all-natural peanut butter, for example). You’ll get through it. I promise.
By week 3, most people notice better energy, clearer thinking, improved digestion, and even better skin. Quitting sugar is one of the best things you can do for yourself to help you age strong and healthy.
Here’s to your health!
